In 1966, according to the orders of the Ministry of Higher and Secondary Special Education of the USSR the post-graduate school was established at the Belarusian State of the Order of the Red Banner Institute of Physical Culture in the major 13.00.04 – “The Theory and Methods of Physical Education and Sports Training”. At different times the name of the major underwent the following changes:

In 1977, it was specified as “The Theory and Methods of Physical Education and Sports Training (Including the Methods of Physical Therapy)”;

In 1982, the previous name “The Theory and Methods of Physical Education and Sports Training” was restored;

In 1986, it was renamed into “Theory and Methods of Physical Education, Sports Training and Therapeutic Exercise;

From 2001 on, it has been named “The Theory and Methods of Physical Education, Sports Training, Therapeutic and Adaptive Physical Exercise”.

In 2001, the postgraduate school started two new scientific majors: 01.02.08 – “Biomechanics”, 03.00.13 – “Physiology”.

Since 2000, the university has opened the Doctorate in the major 13.00.04 – “The Theory and Methods of Physical Education, Sports Training, Therapeutic and Adaptive Physical Exercise”. The postgraduate and doctoral preparation is carried out at the University in accordance with the plan for training the academic staff, which is approved by the University Council, the Ministry for Sports and Tourism of the Republic of Belarus and the State Committee on Science and Technology of the Republic of Belarus. Since 2006, a new contract-based system of admission to the postgraduate school has been introduced. Since 2011, the training of scientific personnel of higher qualification has been carried out on a contract basis.

Since 1983, the postgraduate school has been headed by Natalia A. Burkovskaya.
